
North Wilkesboro Speedway was built in 1946-1947 predating the formation of NASCAR by Enoch Staley, Lawson Curry, Jack Combs, and Charlie Combs on a $1,500 investment as a half-mile dirt track hosting its first race on May 18, 1947. On October 16, 1949, North Wilkesboro Speedway hosted the eighth and final race of the inaugural NASCAR season crowing the very first series champion Red Byron at the speedway. In 1949 the speedway would undergo renovations to its now current 5/8th(0.625 mile) configuration and once again undergo further renovations in 1956 when the speedway would be paved for the first of its three times in its history. North Wilkesboro Speedway would host NASCAR racing for 50 years until Sept 29, 1996 when the final NASCAR Winston Cup Series event was held at the track with winner Jeff Gordon taking his famous No. 24 Dupont Chevrolet to victory lane.
